What Heat Actually Does to Your Skin

When your body heats up in an infrared sauna, blood vessels near the skin's surface open wider. This is called vasodilation (blood vessels expanding to move more blood through). More blood means more oxygen and nutrients reaching skin cells — the raw materials your body needs to repair and build collagen in the first place.

HSPs act like an emergency repair crew. They find damaged proteins in the cell, including the ones that make up your skin's structure, and either fix them or clear them out.

Regular heat exposure trains your body to produce HSPs more efficiently. Athletes use this for muscle recovery. The same repair mechanism works on the cells in your skin. Research on heat shock proteins describes them as one of the body's core defence systems — activated in essentially every cell type whenever it experiences thermal stress, and central to how the body adapts to repeated heat exposure over time.

Near Infrared and Collagen: What We Know, and What We Don't

Full spectrum infrared includes near infrared wavelengths — the shortest, most energetic band of infrared light. Near infrared light has been studied in dermatology using dedicated light panels, with research showing it can stimulate fibroblasts (the cells that produce collagen) and support skin repair. A 2021 study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, for example, exposed human skin to combined red and near infrared light and documented measurable increases in collagen and elastin expression.

Here's where we're going to be straight with you: that study, like most of the research in this space, used a dedicated light-emitting panel held close to the skin — not a full spectrum sauna. A sauna delivers near infrared as part of a broader heat exposure, not as an isolated, high-intensity dose the way a dedicated red light panel does. We're not going to tell you a sauna session is the same as a clinical light therapy treatment, because it isn't. What we will tell you is that the mechanism — near infrared triggering cellular repair — is the same mechanism at work. You're getting a broader, gentler version of it, alongside everything else heat does for your body.

Sweat Isn't Just Water Leaving Your Body

Sweating during an infrared session flushes debris out of pores that daily washing misses. Combined with the increased blood flow already moving nutrients to the surface, you get a two-part process: clearer pores, better-fed skin cells. Neither one is a miracle. Both compound over time.

The Standard

Skincare culture sells you products to apply. It rarely tells you what your body already does better than any serum, if you give it the right conditions. Recovery isn't just about muscles. Your skin is an organ. Train it like one.

How to Use This

Keep sessions in the 45–65°C range — full spectrum heat without pushing past what your skin and cardiovascular system can comfortably handle. Consistency beats intensity here. Three sessions a week, sustained over months, will do more for your skin than one aggressive session ever could.

This isn't a replacement for sunscreen, hydration, or sleep. It's what you add once those basics are already covered — because recovery was never meant to stop at your muscles.
